What we put in writing before you commit
The view guarantee
Before we install, we agree in writing what each camera has to be able to see. If it doesn’t deliver that view at handover, we move it at our cost.
The survey promise
If your existing cabling can carry the cameras, we’ll tell you — even though it means a smaller job.
Free existing-cabling audit before we quote. On a Takapuna job our audit found spare certified capacity, so eight cameras and door access went in with no new cabling at all. Most installers price new cable because checking properly takes a tester and the knowledge to read it.
What a commercial install actually includes
Most of what separates a commercial job from a domestic one happens before a camera goes up. The survey decides where cameras go and why. The cabling decides whether the footage is still usable in five years. The documentation decides whether the next person can work on it.
- Site survey and camera plan — every position justified against what you are actually trying to see
- Cameras from the Hikvision range we install from, specified per position rather than one model everywhere
- Recorder and storage sized to the retention you need, not the retention that fits the box
- PoE structured cabling — certified infrastructure that will still carry whatever you hang off it in five years, not a camera lead
- Commissioning — angles set on site, motion zones tuned, your own passwords rather than factory defaults
- Handover pack — as-built drawings, cable schedule, test reports and warranty paperwork in one PDF
Where the job changes
Warehouse and industrial
Long sightlines, loading bays, yard coverage and racking aisles. Distance is the constraint: past about 90 metres you are into a fibre link rather than a longer copper run. Dust, vibration and wash-down areas change the housing specification, and coastal sites need corrosion-rated housings.
Production rarely stops for a cable run, so most of these jobs go in around shifts.
Retail and hospitality
Till points, entrances, stockroom doors and the back-of-house areas staff actually use. Cameras need to identify faces at the counter, which is a lens and mounting-height decision more than a megapixel one. Fit-outs mean working to the shopfitter’s programme — see retail fit-out cabling.
Office, corporate and multi-site
Entry doors, reception, comms room and car park. Often the smallest camera count and the highest expectation of tidiness — visible cable in a reception ceiling is a problem here in a way it is not in a warehouse. Pairs naturally with access control.
Across branches, the real decision is where recording lives. Local recorders with central viewing keeps footage on site and bandwidth low; centralised recording is simpler to administer and harder on the link. Consistent hardware across sites is what stops the support burden growing.
Small business
Two to five cameras on one recorder covers most small Auckland sites — a shop, a workshop, a small office suite. The temptation is to treat it as a domestic job with a business address on the invoice. The difference is that a business has staff, and staff footage brings obligations a home system does not.
A small commercial system still needs cameras specified per position, cable run in containment rather than draped, and documentation you can hand to an insurer or a landlord. None of that is expensive. All of it gets skipped on a cheap quote.
Three Auckland jobs
- East Tamaki manufacturing plant — ruggedised Cat6A for production monitoring, a fibre link to the office block, and CCTV over the loading bays, installed around shifts.
- Penrose logistics warehouse — fibre backbone between office and warehouse, PoE cameras across the yard, and rugged WiFi for scanners over 4,000m².
- Takapuna accountancy practice — eight PoE cameras and door access over existing Cat6. Our audit found spare certified capacity, so no new cabling was needed.

What is different about a commercial system
Retention
Domestic systems keep a week or two. Commercial retention is usually set by an insurer, a franchise agreement or your own incident policy, and it drives storage size more than camera count does.
Staff and the Privacy Act
Recording your own staff is lawful, but it is collection of personal information under the Privacy Act 2020 — which means a clear purpose, people knowing it happens, and a plan for access requests. Our note on CCTV and privacy law in NZ covers it.
Integration
Cameras, access control and alarm on the same infrastructure is normal on a commercial site and worth planning up front rather than retrofitting.
Working around trading
Most commercial installs cannot stop the business. We book after-hours and weekend work where the site needs it — the East Tamaki plant above went in around shifts.
Documentation
Landlords, insurers and auditors ask for as-builts and test reports. Domestic jobs rarely produce them. Every commercial job we finish does.
What we hold
| PSPLA Company Licence 25-132031 | Security Technician. Installing CCTV commercially in New Zealand requires it. |
|---|---|
| SiteSafe, SiteWise Green, Impac | The pre-quals main contractors and landlords ask for. |
| $5M public liability | Current. |
| 25-year Legrand or CommScope system warranty (certificate issued for your job) | Legrand or CommScope, certificate issued in your name for your job. |
| 12-month workmanship warranty | Every install. |
| Cabling certified to TIA/EIA and AS/NZS 3080 | Fluke-tested per port, report handed over. |
How the job runs
- Free site survey. We walk the site, agree what each camera is for, and check what cabling and containment already exists.
- Camera plan and fixed quote in writing within 24 hours. One number, itemised, with no line items appearing later.
- Install to an agreed programme, after hours where trading requires it. 50% on acceptance to order your gear, balance on completion.
- Commissioning. Angles set on site against the agreed views, motion zones tuned, your own passwords, app access for the people who need it.
- Handover. As-builts, cable schedule, test reports and warranty paperwork in one pack.
What it costs
Commercial pricing is per site, because cable run length, containment, access and camera count vary far more than they do on a house. What we can tell you before a survey is what moves the number, and roughly where similar Auckland sites land.
Those figures are on our business CCTV cost guide. For your site specifically, the survey is free and the quote is fixed.
Questions we get
How much does it cost to install CCTV cameras in New Zealand?
Commercial systems are priced per site after a survey, because run lengths, containment and access move the number more than camera count does. Typical Auckland bands are on our business CCTV cost guide. The survey is free and the quote is fixed in writing within 24 hours.
Which CCTV camera is best for commercial use?
There is no single answer, and anyone giving you one has not looked at your site. A till point wants a short lens at low mounting height for faces. A yard wants reach and weather rating. A loading bay wants width. We specify per position from the Hikvision range, which usually means two or three different models on one job.
What are the legal requirements for using CCTV in New Zealand?
Commercial CCTV collects personal information, so the Privacy Act 2020 applies: a clear purpose for recording, people being aware it happens, reasonable security on the footage, and a process for access requests. Installing it commercially also requires a PSPLA licence — ours is Company Licence 25-132031. More in our guide to CCTV and privacy law.
How long do we need to keep footage?
There is no fixed legal period. It is usually set by your insurer, a franchise agreement or your own incident policy, and the Privacy Act expects you not to keep it longer than you need. Tell us the retention you want and we size the storage to it.
Can you install outside trading hours?
Yes. After-hours, evening and weekend work is a standard booking option and is how most retail and production sites get done without losing a day. Rates are on our pricing page.
Can CCTV run over our existing network cabling?
Often, yes — and it is worth checking before anyone quotes new cable. On a Takapuna job our audit found enough spare certified capacity for eight cameras and door access, so no new cabling was needed. If the existing cable is untested or the wrong category, we will tell you that too.
