Why Does My Office WiFi Drop in the Meeting Room? A 5-Minute Diagnostic

May 3, 2026

by Cabling For U

Quick answer

Why does WiFi keep dropping in my Auckland office meeting room?

The meeting room is too far from the nearest access point, or all APs are sharing one congested 2.4GHz channel. The fix is an additional AP wired with Cat6 backhaul mounted in the meeting room ceiling. Most Auckland offices we audit have 1 AP for the whole floor — needs 2-3 APs minimum for 80%+ uptime in meeting rooms. Same-day install option. SMB network install from $1,200.

Office WiFi that drops only in the meeting room is one of the most common cabling-misdiagnosed faults we see in Auckland. The owner blames the ISP, the router, or the laptop — but the fix is usually 30 minutes of patching and a fresh Cat6 run. Below is a 5-minute self-diagnostic, the three most common root causes, and how much each one typically costs to fix in 2026.

"If your WiFi keeps dropping in the same room, it's almost never your internet plan — it's the cable feeding the access point."

How do I know if my WiFi drop is a cabling problem?

Walk to the room with the bad signal and check three things: (1) the access point ceiling tile or wall mount — is the cable run kinked, exposed, or above 90m? (2) the patch panel in the comms cupboard — are cables labelled and tested? (3) your speed test result — does Ethernet from a desk in the same area work fine? If Ethernet is fast in the same area but WiFi is bad, it's almost always the cable feeding the access point.

What are the three most common cabling causes?

First, the access point cable is run too far from the patch panel (Cat6 is rated for 90m max — anything longer drops signal and PoE). Second, a cheap RJ45 keystone or coupler in the run is causing intermittent packet loss. Third, the AP is on a 100Mbps switch port instead of gigabit. All three are 1-2 hour fixes.

How much does it cost to fix office WiFi dead zones?

Most Auckland WiFi-dead-zone fixes are NZD 350-650. That covers a same-day visit, a fresh Cat6 run to the AP, a tested patch and PoE switch port. A ceiling-mounted AP add at a new location is NZD 850-1,200 supplied and installed. We give you a fixed price in 24 hours after a free site visit.

What if WiFi drops on every device, not just one?

Then it's almost certainly the cable feeding the access point or the access point itself. WiFi drops affecting everyone in a single room point to upstream infrastructure (cable + switch + AP), not the user devices. We can confirm the root cause in 15 minutes on site with a Fluke certifier.

What does a flaky meeting-room WiFi cost your team?

A single dropped Teams call wastes about 4 minutes of every attendee's time (reconnect + restart + recap). For an 8-person sales meeting, that's 32 minutes of payroll per drop. If the WiFi drops twice a day across 3 meetings, you're losing roughly NZD 14,000 per year on a single bad cable run. Most Auckland fixes are completed in a single 90-minute visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really cabling and not the WiFi router?
Almost always. If WiFi works in some rooms but not others, the WiFi router itself is fine — the issue is the wired backbone feeding each access point. Replacing the router won't help.
Can you diagnose remotely?
No — Auckland WiFi diagnoses need an on-site Fluke certifier reading because most issues are physical (cable damage, bad terminations, run length). The site visit is free.
How quickly can you start?
Most diagnostic visits are booked the same day if you call before noon. Same-Day Service guarantee: if we can't get to you the same day, the call-out is free.
Do you replace the access points too?
If the AP itself is the problem (older 802.11n, weak antenna), yes — typical AP swap is NZD 280-450 supplied and installed. Most of the time the AP is fine and only the cable needs work.
What areas of Auckland do you cover?
All of Auckland — Central, North Shore, West, East and South — plus Orewa, Silverdale and Pukekohe. Travel inside 40km is included.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our Auckland cabling services, pricing and process. Can't find what you're after? Call us on 0800 222 546.

How much does network cabling cost?

Pricing depends on the number of data points, cable type (Cat6 / Cat6a / fibre) and building complexity. We provide free site surveys and upfront fixed-price quotes — no hidden costs. Most extra Cat6 outlets start from $120 +GST. Call 0800 222 546 to book yours.

Do you charge for site surveys and quotes?

No — site surveys and quotes are free. Book online or call 0800 222 546 and one of our team will come to you, assess the job, and give you a clear fixed price before any work begins.

How long does a typical install take?

A standard residential or small-office install is usually completed in a single day — often same-day. Larger commercial or enterprise projects are planned with a clear timeline given before work begins, so you always know what to expect.

Are your technicians certified and licensed?

Yes. All installs are completed to TIA/EIA and AS/NZS 3080 standards, and any associated electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians. We are fully insured with $5M public liability cover.

What areas of Auckland do you service?

We service all of Auckland — Central, North Shore, West, East and South Auckland — plus the North including Orewa, Silverdale, Warkworth, Snells Beach and Mangawhai.

Do you provide a warranty on your work?

Yes. Every cabling install is tested, documented and backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty. If anything isn't right after your install, we'll come back and fix it.

Cat6 vs Cat6a — which cable should I choose?

For most homes and small offices, Cat6 is more than enough — it handles gigabit speeds easily and is more affordable. Cat6a suits businesses running heavy data, future-proofing for 10-gigabit networks, or longer cable runs. We'll recommend the right cable during your free site survey.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Auckland?

CCTV pricing depends on the number of cameras, indoor vs outdoor placement, recording method (NVR vs cloud) and cabling required. Most residential installs sit in the $1,500–$3,500 range, with commercial systems quoted on-site. Book a free survey on 0800 222 546.

Can you install fibre optic cabling for my business?

Yes — we install indoor and outdoor fibre including OS2 single-mode and OM3/OM4 multi-mode for backbone runs, server rooms and inter-building links across Auckland. All terminations are tested and certified to AS/NZS standards.

Do you provide after-hours or emergency callouts?

Yes. Real people answer Mon–Sun, and we offer emergency callouts for downed networks, broken cabling, camera failures and business-critical outages. Call 0800 222 546 anytime.

Can you add data points to an existing home or office?

Absolutely — adding data points to existing buildings is one of our most common jobs. We minimise wall damage, label every cable and tidy patch panels so future changes are easy. Most retrofits are completed in a single visit.
