What is fibre optic installation and when do you need it?

Fibre optic installation runs glass cable between buildings or floors to carry data at speeds Cat6 can't reach — up to 100 Gbps over kilometres with no signal loss. You need it for: multi-building campuses, large open-plan offices, CCTV backhaul over distance, or any 10 GbE backbone application.

Itemised within 24 hours. Single-mode vs multi-mode, splice count, termination type.

3

Pull + splice

OTDR certify

Bi-directional OTDR scan. Written test report. Insertion loss documented per splice.

Common scenarios

Who books this service

🏢

Office — floor to floor

Multi-storey office wants 10 GbE between IT room and each floor. Standard single-mode SM with LC connectors.

📡

CCTV backhaul over distance

Carpark CCTV needs to reach the NVR in the main building 400 m away. Cat6 can't go that far — fibre can.

🏛

Multi-tenant building riser

Shared riser fibre with per-tenant splices and break-out trays. We deliver labelled patch panels per tenant.

🏭

Industrial estate links

Building A to Building B across the carpark. Aerial or underground duct, fusion-spliced both ends.

🏠

Premium home network

Multi-storey or large section home wanting a true 10 GbE backbone. Less common but we do it.

🔌

ISP / data centre backbone

Patch frame work, fusion splicing, certification to your hand-off spec. We work with major Auckland ISPs.

Common questions

FAQ

Single-mode or multi-mode — which should I install?
Single-mode (SM) for runs over 300 m or 10 GbE. Multi-mode (MM, OM4) for short runs under 300 m where you want cheaper transceivers. Most Auckland commercial installs are single-mode for future-proofing.
What's the difference between fusion and mechanical splicing?
Fusion splices melt the glass together — permanent, low loss (typically 0.05 dB). Mechanical splices use alignment + index gel — reusable, higher loss (0.3 dB). We use fusion for permanent installs.
Do you provide a test report?
Yes. Every install includes bi-directional OTDR scan + written insertion loss test per splice + per termination. PDF you can hand to your IT team or auditor.
How long does a typical install take?
A 50 m single-mode link with 2 splices and 2 terminations takes 1 working day. Multi-floor riser installs 2–3 days depending on duct access.
Can you work with existing patch frames?
Yes. Bring your patch frame specs or photograph the current rack and we'll spec termination type, connector colour, and labelling to match.
Do you cover all of Auckland?
Yes — North Shore through Pukekohe. Travel surcharge applies for runs beyond 30 km from central Auckland.
