What is a wireless microwave radio link and when do you need one?

A wireless microwave (or millimetre-wave) radio link uses two directional antennas to beam high-speed data between two buildings with clear line-of-sight. Up to 10 Gbps, multi-kilometre range, no trenching, no fibre lease. Best for: multi-site businesses needing fast deployment, sites where fibre install is blocked or uneconomic, or temporary high-bandwidth event links.

How it works

4 steps from call to certified install

No call centre. No mystery quotes. No surprise sub-contractors.

1

Line-of-sight survey

Satellite imagery + 3D terrain check first. Then on-site signal test if path looks clear.

2

Spec + scope

Frequency band (5 GHz / 24 GHz / 60 GHz / 80 GHz), antenna size, mounting design, throughput target.

3

Mount + align

Mast or rooftop mount both ends. Manual alignment with signal-strength meter. Tightened to spec.

4

Commission + handover

Throughput test, latency test, written commissioning report. Optional ongoing monitoring.

Common scenarios

Who books this service

🏢

Multi-site business

Two offices, no fibre available, need them on one network. Done in days.

🏫

School / campus link

Main building to outbuilding 800 m away. Fibre trench would cost $50k — radio link $9k.

🏭

Industrial estate

Warehouse to office over 2 km of carpark and roads. Radio link is the obvious answer.

🔗

Backup / failover link

Primary fibre + secondary microwave radio. Auto-failover if Chorus fibre goes down.

🎉

Temporary event link

Major event needs 1 Gbps for 5 days. Mount, link up, dismount — cheaper than fibre install.

📶

ISP last-mile delivery

Last-mile customer too far from fibre. Microwave delivers fibre-equivalent speeds.

Common questions

FAQ

Do I need line-of-sight?
Yes — microwave radio is strictly line-of-sight. We do a free satellite + 3D terrain survey first. If the path is blocked by a building or hill, the link won't work without a relay.
How weather-resistant is it?
Rain causes signal attenuation at 80 GHz, less at lower frequencies. We design with link budget margin to maintain throughput in Auckland's typical heavy-rain events. SLA guarantees 99.9% uptime.
Do I need a radio licence?
Most frequencies we use (5 GHz, 24 GHz, 60 GHz) are licence-exempt for point-to-point use in NZ. 80 GHz requires RSM registration which we handle as part of the install.
What's the latency vs fibre?
Slightly faster than fibre over the same distance — microwave travels in straight lines, fibre routes through ducts. Typical <1 ms one-way for short links.
How long does an install take?
Site survey day 1. Spec + quote day 2–3. Mast install + alignment day 4–5. Most links are live within 1 week of order.
Can you do failover with our existing fibre?
Yes — common setup. Primary fibre, secondary microwave, BGP or static-route failover with sub-second cutover. We supply the failover router or work with your existing one.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our Auckland cabling services, pricing and process. Can't find what you're after? Call us on 0800 222 546.

How much does network cabling cost?

Pricing depends on the number of data points, cable type (Cat6 / Cat6a / fibre) and building complexity. We provide free site surveys and upfront fixed-price quotes — no hidden costs. Most extra Cat6 outlets start from $120 +GST. Call 0800 222 546 to book yours.

Do you charge for site surveys and quotes?

No — site surveys and quotes are free. Book online or call 0800 222 546 and one of our team will come to you, assess the job, and give you a clear fixed price before any work begins.

How long does a typical install take?

A standard residential or small-office install is usually completed in a single day — often same-day. Larger commercial or enterprise projects are planned with a clear timeline given before work begins, so you always know what to expect.

Are your technicians certified and licensed?

Yes. All installs are completed to TIA/EIA and AS/NZS 3080 standards, and any associated electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians. We are fully insured with $5M public liability cover.

What areas of Auckland do you service?

We service all of Auckland — Central, North Shore, West, East and South Auckland — plus the North including Orewa, Silverdale, Warkworth, Snells Beach and Mangawhai.

Do you provide a warranty on your work?

Yes. Every cabling install is tested, documented and backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty. If anything isn't right after your install, we'll come back and fix it.

Cat6 vs Cat6a — which cable should I choose?

For most homes and small offices, Cat6 is more than enough — it handles gigabit speeds easily and is more affordable. Cat6a suits businesses running heavy data, future-proofing for 10-gigabit networks, or longer cable runs. We'll recommend the right cable during your free site survey.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Auckland?

CCTV pricing depends on the number of cameras, indoor vs outdoor placement, recording method (NVR vs cloud) and cabling required. Most residential installs sit in the $1,500–$3,500 range, with commercial systems quoted on-site. Book a free survey on 0800 222 546.

Can you install fibre optic cabling for my business?

Yes — we install indoor and outdoor fibre including OS2 single-mode and OM3/OM4 multi-mode for backbone runs, server rooms and inter-building links across Auckland. All terminations are tested and certified to AS/NZS standards.

Do you provide after-hours or emergency callouts?

Yes. Real people answer Mon–Sun, and we offer emergency callouts for downed networks, broken cabling, camera failures and business-critical outages. Call 0800 222 546 anytime.

Can you add data points to an existing home or office?

Absolutely — adding data points to existing buildings is one of our most common jobs. We minimise wall damage, label every cable and tidy patch panels so future changes are easy. Most retrofits are completed in a single visit.
