The Te Atatu story: Lisa had a Ring doorbell. She thought she was covered. Then in March a guy came over the side fence at 2pm on a Wednesday, walked straight past the Ring (which never saw him), tried the laundry slider, opened the garage from inside, and was gone in seven minutes.

When Lisa got home and checked the Ring app, the only footage was an Amazon courier dropping a parcel at 11am. Her doorbell had a 130-degree field of view of one part of her front porch. The intruder used the other 230 degrees of her property.

The system we installed three weeks later cost $2,150 fitted. Four Hikvision cameras: side gate, back door, garage, driveway. 30 days of recording, motion-triggered cloud backup, smartphone alerts. The Ring stayed where it was — perfect for parcels. The CCTV is what protects the house.

The 5 things to check before any installer puts cameras on your walls

  • Site walk before quote — not a phone estimate. Anyone who quotes cameras without walking the property is guessing where the entry points are. Lisa’s break-in went through the side gate — a phone quote would have missed it.
  • 30+ days recording with motion-triggered cloud backup. Anything less is designed to lose evidence. Most break-ins are discovered 5–10 days later when something turns up missing.
  • Smartphone app set up on installation day, with you. If they leave you the manual and a YouTube link, the system isn’t really installed. We tune motion zones to ignore cars and trees so you don’t get 40 pings a day.
  • AS/NZS 3080-certified cabling. Most camera failures in year two are cable failures, not camera failures. Cowboys use whatever’s cheapest; we use the same standard as data cabling.
  • 12-month workmanship warranty in writing + manufacturer warranty. Hikvision and Dahua both offer 2–3 year hardware warranties; the install warranty is separate. Get both, written, before you pay.

Before you sign any quote for cameras, run it through this checklist. We built it after replacing way too many systems that worked at install but failed in year two. It tells you, in 5 minutes, whether your installer actually knows what they’re doing — or whether you’re paying for a sticker on the box and a hope.

  • The motion-zone setting cowboys leave on default (which is why your system pings 80 times a day)
  • The single line on a quote that means they’re using bargain-bin cable
  • The cloud-backup question 90% of installers can’t answer
  • The NZ privacy-compliance step required for any system covering the street
  • The warranty wording that protects you when the recorder dies in month 14

Auckland CCTV install FAQ

What does a typical Auckland CCTV install cost in 2026?

A 3-camera Starter kit costs $1,290–$1,490 supplied and fitted. A 4-camera Standard install lands around $2,150–$2,500. A 6–8 camera Pro setup with 4K Starlight cameras + UPS + larger storage runs $3,450–$4,800. Same-day install pricing is at the higher end of each tier.

Hikvision vs Dahua — which should I pick?

Hikvision is the safer pick for most Auckland homes: cleaner app, easier setup, slightly better daytime image. Dahua wins for very dark approaches (long driveways, rural sections) where its low-light sensors really shine. We wrote the full breakdown: Hikvision vs Dahua NZ 2026 honest comparison.

Is 4K really better than 1080p for home CCTV?

Only on the cameras that need it — usually the driveway and front gate. 4K gives you the ability to digitally zoom in on number plates and faces after the event. For coverage cameras (side gate, back yard), 1080p is plenty and uses 4x less storage. Most of our 4-camera installs mix the two: 4K where it matters, 1080p where it doesn’t.

Will my Ring doorbell still work alongside proper CCTV?

Yes — we leave it exactly where it is. Ring is great for parcels and front-door visitors. The CCTV system covers the 230 degrees of your property the Ring doesn’t see. They run independently and complement each other.

Do I need to comply with NZ privacy laws when filming?

Yes — if any camera captures the street or a neighbour’s property, you have obligations under the Privacy Act 2020. We position cameras to minimise this and walk you through the signage and notice requirements during the site visit. This is one of the questions most cowboy installers can’t answer.

Will the cameras work if my power or internet drops?

Yes — we default to a small UPS on the recorder so it stays up through short power outages, and the recorder writes to its own internal drive even if your internet is down. You lose the smartphone alerts during the outage, but every camera keeps recording locally.

Can I add cameras later?

Yes. The NVR is sized to handle 8 channels minimum on the kits we install. The cabling is laid in conduit so additional runs are straightforward. Many Auckland customers start with 4 cameras and add 2–4 more in year two as they identify additional coverage gaps.

How long does a same-day install take?

For a 4-camera install with cabling already in place, 4–6 hours. For a fresh install with full cable runs, typically a full day. Smartphone app setup is included before we leave — we don’t consider the system installed until you’ve received a test alert on your phone.
