Cat6 (Category 6) is the current standard for residential and commercial Ethernet wiring. It supports 1 Gbps speeds at the standard 100 m run and up to 10 Gbps on shorter runs (under 55 m). In Auckland it is what we install in 95% of homes & offices.

Cat6 supports 1 Gbps (gigabit) over a full 100 m run. On runs under 55 m, Cat6 can carry 10 Gbps. Cat6a, by comparison, carries 10 Gbps over the full 100 m. For Auckland home use, Cat6 is sufficient unless you are wiring a server room.

Cat6 carries 10 Gbps up to 55 m and 1 Gbps up to 100 m. Cat6a carries 10 Gbps over the full 100 m and has tighter shielding against crosstalk. Cat6a costs about 30% more and is thicker, so it is harder to pull through tight wall cavities. For most Auckland homes Cat6 is the right choice. For multi-tenant office runs over 55 m or future-proofing for 10 GbE, choose Cat6a.

Cat6 is the right choice for most Auckland homes & small offices. Cat6a is worth the extra cost for commercial runs over 55 m or future-proofing. ‘Cat6e’ is a marketing term — it is not a TIA standard. If a quote mentions Cat6e, treat it as Cat6 with marketing pricing.

No. We use minimal-invasive cable runs via subfloor, ceiling cavity, or wall cavity. Wall plates cover the entry point. In most installs, the only visible change is the wall jackpoint. We vacuum up after every job.
