Mt Eden cabling is different. Here’s why.

Most Mt Eden homes are pre-1960 villas, bungalows, or character cottages. Plaster-and-lath internal walls. Solid-timber floors with limited subfloor access. Original kauri framing you don’t want to drill through carelessly. The wrong installer will tear out a skirting board, leave plaster dust everywhere, and quote you $1,200 to “patch and paint” what they damaged.

The right installer plans the cable path on the site visit, uses the existing subfloor or roof cavity where possible, drops the cable through a single concealed wall point per outlet, and patches with matching plaster — not gib. Our standard Mt Eden Cat6 install in a 3-bedroom villa is $560–$720 supplied, fitted, Fluke-tested, with full make-good included. No surprises on the invoice.

Three Mt Eden jobs we did this quarter

Job A — Mt Eden Village 1920s villa, work-from-home upgrade. Owner runs a graphic design business from a converted dining-room office. WiFi was 80–150 Mbps at the desk, modem 12m away in the front lounge. We ran one Cat6 cable through the original 1920s subfloor (no ceiling disruption), out to a wall outlet next to the desk. Plastered, painted to match, dust sheeted everything. Time on site: 3.5 hours. Cost: $620. Now stable at 920 Mbps wired.

Job B — Epsom Grammar zone, 4-bedroom family home with 3 teenagers. WiFi being hit by 12–16 devices (laptops, gaming consoles, phones, smart TVs). Random drop-outs during Zoom classes. We installed 2 Cat6 outlets (one in the home office, one in the teenagers’ shared study area) plus a wall-mounted access point in the upstairs hallway. Net result: every device on the property holds 700+ Mbps. Cost: $890 all-in. School-day Wi-Fi has been stable for 9 weeks straight.

Job C — Sandringham 2018-built terraced house, CCTV after car break-in. Car broken into in the shared driveway. We installed 4 Hikvision ColorVu cameras (driveway, both side gates, front door), 4TB NVR, smartphone app with motion-zone alerts. Two-day install. Cost: $2,290 all-in. Captured the offender returning within 6 weeks; police identified suspect from footage and dropped charges followed.

What makes Mt Eden different from other Auckland suburbs

1. Character home compliance. A lot of Mt Eden villas are pre-1944 and sit under Auckland Council’s character protections. We never alter the external facade, never drill through visible heritage features (kauri panelling, leadlight windows, decorative skirting), and we coordinate with painters/plasterers if make-good requires it. You get our $5M public liability cover on every job.

2. Apartment and townhouse installs. Mt Eden has a lot of newer multi-unit developments (Mt Eden Village, Dominion Road, Sandringham Road). Most of these have body-corporate rules about cable runs — we sort the consent paperwork on your behalf and use internal-only paths so we don’t touch shared walls or risers without sign-off.

3. Grammar zone families = more devices, more home offices, more pressure on WiFi. Two working adults, one to three kids on devices, plus smart-home gear. The cheap mesh systems fail under this load. The fix is hardwired access points placed correctly — not more mesh nodes. We typically run 1–2 Cat6 cables to ceiling-mounted UniFi access points; total cost $680–$1,100 for a whole-home fix that holds 900+ Mbps per device.

Mt Eden install FAQ

How much does Cat6 cabling cost in a Mt Eden villa?

A standard 4-outlet Cat6 install in a Mt Eden character villa costs $560–$720 supplied, fitted, Fluke-tested, with full make-good (plaster, paint) included. We use the existing subfloor or roof cavity wherever possible and only drill one concealed wall entry point per outlet. 1990s+ Mt Eden homes are $480–$580 (easier cable paths).

I live in an apartment / townhouse — can you install cabling?

Yes — most modern Mt Eden apartments and townhouses are straightforward. We handle the body-corporate consent paperwork, use internal-only cable paths (no shared walls or risers without sign-off), and complete a typical 2-outlet install in 2–3 hours. From $420 supplied, fitted, tested.

Do you also cover Epsom, Sandringham, Three Kings, Balmoral?

Yes — all central Auckland suburbs from Mt Eden, Epsom and Sandringham across to Three Kings, Balmoral, Royal Oak, Onehunga. Same-day install if booked before 11am. We charge zero call-out fee if we can’t fix the job same day.

My WiFi is poor in the back of my villa — is hardwired cabling worth it?

For most Mt Eden villas, yes. The thick plaster-and-lath internal walls plus matai/kauri framing absorb WiFi badly — you can have full bars and still get 30–100 Mbps in the back rooms. One Cat6 cable to a wall-mounted access point at the back of the house typically takes you to 700–920 Mbps stable, for around $560–$680 all-in. Mesh extenders are cheaper but cut your speed by 30–60% per hop.

Will you damage my heritage features?

No — we never alter external facade, never drill through visible kauri panelling, leadlight windows, or decorative skirting. We plan every cable path on the site visit and walk you through exactly where it’ll run before we start. If a customer says “I don’t want any visible cabling”, that’s a constraint we design around. Our work carries full $5M public liability cover.

Do you also do CCTV, burglar alarms, and access control in Mt Eden?

Yes — 4-camera CCTV from $2,150, monitored burglar alarm from $1,290, keycard/keyfob access from $890 per door. Bundled together with cabling the saving is typically $400–$800 vs separate jobs. See our Auckland CCTV pricing, burglar alarm pricing and access control pricing pages.
