Why most Te Atatu cabling jobs fall into two patterns

Pattern 1: the 1980s–1990s state-house WiFi black hole. A lot of Te Atatu South was built between 1985 and 1998 — brick veneer over timber framing, with the modem usually parked in the front lounge near the road. WiFi to the back bedrooms reads 2–5 bars but the actual throughput collapses to 30–80 Mbps because the signal is fighting the steel garage door, the kitchen appliances, and the bathroom. Fix: one Cat6 to the back of the house, $480–$580 supplied, fitted, Fluke-tested.

Pattern 2: peninsula homes with a separate sleepout or office in the back yard. Lots of Te Atatu Peninsula properties have a converted garage, granny flat or detached home office. The fibre modem is in the main house and the WiFi gets crushed by two exterior walls plus open ground. A single Cat6A run from the main house solves it permanently — same fix we used for Tom’s Ranui garage (Fluke-tested 489 Mbps).

Two real Te Atatu jobs we see every month

Job A — the home-office Zoom call problem. Owner works from a back-room office in a 1992 brick-and-tile on the Peninsula. Zoom freezes every 8–10 minutes. SpeedTest at the desk reads 38 Mbps down. SpeedTest standing next to the modem reads 720 Mbps. Cause: WiFi crushed by three internal walls and a steel fridge. We installed one Cat6 wall outlet behind the desk, plugged the laptop in, retested at 920 Mbps. Time on site: 2.5 hours. Cost: $520.

Job B — the CCTV-after-break-in install. Te Atatu South homeowner had their car broken into in the driveway. We installed 4 Hikvision ColorVu cameras (driveway, side gate, back yard, front door), 4TB NVR with 30-day rolling recording, and smartphone notifications. Same-day quote, two-day install. Cost: $2,290 all-in. They got useful footage of two attempted entries inside three months — both deterred when the front-door camera lit up.

What makes Te Atatu different from other West Auckland suburbs

Te Atatu sits on a peninsula, which means a lot of homes back onto either the Whau River, Henderson Creek or the harbour. Three things to keep in mind:

1. Salt air on exposed CCTV. Coastal-facing cameras on the north side of the Peninsula degrade faster — we spec IP66 housings and stainless mounting hardware as standard for Te Atatu CCTV. Cheaper installers use galvanized brackets that rust through inside 18 months.

2. Older homes with limited cable paths. A lot of 1970s–1980s Te Atatu homes have low-pitch roofs and no usable subfloor crawl space — meaning Cat6 has to run external in conduit, not through the ceiling cavity. We quote this honestly in the site visit; you don’t pay for ceiling access we can’t get.

3. Fibre modem placement. Chorus typically installs the ONT (fibre modem) wherever the road-facing wall meets the meter board — which is rarely where you actually need WiFi. A single Cat6 run from the ONT to a central location (usually the hallway or living room) immediately solves whole-house WiFi for $480.

Te Atatu install FAQ

How much does Cat6 cabling cost in Te Atatu?

A standard 4-outlet Cat6 install in a single-storey Te Atatu home costs $480–$580 supplied, fitted, and Fluke-tested. A Cat6A run to a detached space (sleepout, granny flat, garage) is $560–$780 depending on the path between buildings. Same-day install is at the higher end of each range.

Do you cover both Te Atatu Peninsula and Te Atatu South?

Yes — both suburbs plus surrounding West Auckland (West Harbour, Henderson, Ranui, Massey, New Lynn). Most installs are done same-day if booked before 11am. We charge zero call-out fee if we can’t fix the job same day.

I had a break-in. Can you install CCTV this week?

Yes — same-day site visit, two-day install for a 4-camera bundle is standard. We use Hikvision ColorVu or Dahua TiOC cameras with IR night vision plus white-light deterrent, IP66 housings, 4TB NVR with 30-day recording, and smartphone app with motion alerts. From $2,150 supplied, fitted, configured.

My home is rented — can I still install cabling?

Yes, with the landlord’s written consent. We do the minimum invasive install (single drill point per outlet, white surface trunking instead of in-wall where required) and provide a make-good certificate so the landlord knows exactly what’s been installed and where.

Do you also do burglar alarms in Te Atatu?

Yes — 4-zone monitored alarm from $1,290 with first 12 months of monitoring included. Bundled with CCTV the saving is typically $300–$500 vs separate jobs. See our Auckland burglar alarm pricing page.
