A real Ranui install: Tom’s garage WiFi rescue

Tom lives in a converted garage at the back of a Ranui section. The fibre modem is in the main house, almost the entire length of the property away. By the time the WiFi signal made it to his desk, it was unusable for gaming and barely fast enough for a Zoom call. He’d tried mesh extenders. He’d tried moving the router. Nothing worked.

We ran one Cat6A cable from the main house through the subfloor to a wall-mounted jackpoint in the garage. Fluke-tested at 489 Mbps down / 460 Mbps up on Tom’s desktop. Same day. Photos, costs, and the 5 things every Ranui homeowner should check before hiring a cabling installer are all in the full case study.

What Ranui homes typically need

Ranui has a lot of older 1970s–1980s brick-and-tile and weatherboard homes, plus newer subdivisions with detached garages, granny flats, and converted sleepouts. The most common cabling jobs we do in Ranui:

Why Ranui WiFi struggles (and the cheapest fix)

Two patterns we see constantly in Ranui:

1. Detached living spaces. Lots of Ranui sections have a garage, sleepout, or granny flat behind the main house. The fibre modem is in the main house, and WiFi gets crushed by the time it crosses two exterior walls plus open ground. A single Cat6 or Cat6A run from the main house solves it permanently — no mesh, no extender, no router upgrade required.

2. Older brick & lath-and-plaster walls. Some 1970s and 1980s Ranui homes have plaster-and-lath internal walls or double-brick exterior that absorb WiFi badly. The fix is a Cat6 cable to a wall-mounted access point in the room where WiFi is weakest — typically the back bedroom or the home office. For more on why this happens, see why your 1 Gbps fibre delivers only 50 Mbps.

Ranui install FAQ

How much does Cat6 cabling cost in Ranui?

A standard 4-outlet Cat6 install in a single-storey Ranui home costs $480–$580 supplied, fitted, and Fluke-tested. A Cat6A run to a detached space (like Tom’s garage) is $560–$780 depending on the path between buildings. Same-day install is at the higher end of each range.

Do you service all of Ranui?

Yes — all Ranui postcodes and surrounding West Auckland suburbs (Massey, Henderson, Te Atatu, Sunnyvale, Glen Eden). Most installs are done same-day if booked before 11am.

What if I have a converted garage like Tom’s?

Detached-space WiFi is one of the most common Ranui jobs we do. We walk the property, plan the cable path under the main house and across to the detached building, and quote in writing within 24 hours. Cat6A is usually the right spec for these runs — it holds full speed across the distance. See Tom’s full case study above for photos and final speed test.

Will I really get 1 Gbps fibre speeds after a cable install?

Yes — we Fluke-test every install to certify it. Tom’s job tested at 489 Mbps down / 460 Mbps up on his desktop, which is right at his connection’s limit. The cable is rarely the bottleneck; it’s usually the wireless link or the fibre handoff that was holding speed back.

Do you also do CCTV and alarms in Ranui?

Yes — same crew, same fixed-price approach. 4-camera CCTV from $2,150, monitored burglar alarm from $1,290, or both bundled together with cabling for 15–25% savings vs separate jobs. See our Auckland burglar alarm pricing and CCTV installation pricing pages.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our Auckland cabling services, pricing and process. Can't find what you're after? Call us on 0800 222 546.

How much does network cabling cost?

Pricing depends on the number of data points, cable type (Cat6 / Cat6a / fibre) and building complexity. We provide free site surveys and upfront fixed-price quotes — no hidden costs. Most extra Cat6 outlets start from $120 +GST. Call 0800 222 546 to book yours.

Do you charge for site surveys and quotes?

No — site surveys and quotes are free. Book online or call 0800 222 546 and one of our team will come to you, assess the job, and give you a clear fixed price before any work begins.

How long does a typical install take?

A standard residential or small-office install is usually completed in a single day — often same-day. Larger commercial or enterprise projects are planned with a clear timeline given before work begins, so you always know what to expect.

Are your technicians certified and licensed?

Yes. All installs are completed to TIA/EIA and AS/NZS 3080 standards, and any associated electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians. We are fully insured with $5M public liability cover.

What areas of Auckland do you service?

We service all of Auckland — Central, North Shore, West, East and South Auckland — plus the North including Orewa, Silverdale, Warkworth, Snells Beach and Mangawhai.

Do you provide a warranty on your work?

Yes. Every cabling install is tested, documented and backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty. If anything isn't right after your install, we'll come back and fix it.

Cat6 vs Cat6a — which cable should I choose?

For most homes and small offices, Cat6 is more than enough — it handles gigabit speeds easily and is more affordable. Cat6a suits businesses running heavy data, future-proofing for 10-gigabit networks, or longer cable runs. We'll recommend the right cable during your free site survey.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Auckland?

CCTV pricing depends on the number of cameras, indoor vs outdoor placement, recording method (NVR vs cloud) and cabling required. Most residential installs sit in the $1,500–$3,500 range, with commercial systems quoted on-site. Book a free survey on 0800 222 546.

Can you install fibre optic cabling for my business?

Yes — we install indoor and outdoor fibre including OS2 single-mode and OM3/OM4 multi-mode for backbone runs, server rooms and inter-building links across Auckland. All terminations are tested and certified to AS/NZS standards.

Do you provide after-hours or emergency callouts?

Yes. Real people answer Mon–Sun, and we offer emergency callouts for downed networks, broken cabling, camera failures and business-critical outages. Call 0800 222 546 anytime.

Can you add data points to an existing home or office?

Absolutely — adding data points to existing buildings is one of our most common jobs. We minimise wall damage, label every cable and tidy patch panels so future changes are easy. Most retrofits are completed in a single visit.
