Two-storey family home · Auckland
Project overview
- Timeline:
- 2026
- Duration:
- One visit
- Location:
- Auckland, New Zealand
- Scale:
- 2 Cat6 runs · 2 floors
- Systems:
- Cat6 data cabling · wired backhaul for WiFi
Scope of work
- Two Cat6 runs from the ground-floor router position to the upper floor
- Both ends terminated to outlets and tested
- Quoted before the visit from the customer's description; price held on the day
- Completed in a single visit
Project background
Our customer had a two-storey home where the connection downstairs was fine and the connection upstairs was not. The router lived on the ground floor, and anything upstairs struggled to hold a usable signal through the floor.
The question on a job like this is always whether another wireless unit upstairs would solve it. In a two-storey home it usually will not, because the new unit has to talk to the router through the same floor that is causing the problem. The fix is a cable between the floors, with WiFi or a wired connection upstairs running from the end of it.
Challenges
The floor is the obstacle
A concrete or timber floor with services in it attenuates WiFi far more than a wall. A wireless node placed upstairs relays a weak signal and loses more on every hop.
Quoting without a visit
The customer wanted a price before committing to a visit. We quoted from the description of the house and held that price when we arrived and saw the route.
Keeping it tidy
Two runs through a lived-in home have to be routed and finished properly, not clipped along skirting boards.
One visit
A small job still has to be done once, tested and left working, so the customer is not waiting on a second appointment.
We quote jobs like this from the description and a couple of photos, and the price we quote is the price you pay.
How Cabling For U delivered
Survey & Advice
- Confirmed on arrival that a cable between the floors was the right fix rather than a second wireless unit.
- Agreed the outlet positions upstairs with the customer before any drilling.
Cabling & Termination
- Ran two Cat6 cables from the router position to the upper floor.
- Terminated both ends to outlets and tested them before handover.
Handover
- Checked the connection upstairs where the customer uses it.
- Invoiced at the price quoted before the visit.
Project results
Cabling For U completed both runs in a single visit, at the price quoted before we arrived, with both outlets tested.
Upstairs now has a wired connection that does not depend on signal getting through the floor, and any WiFi upstairs can run from the end of that cable instead of relaying through it. The same two-run job is the fix for most two-storey homes where the complaint is "it works downstairs but not up".
When the floor between you and the router is the problem, another wireless box rarely fixes it. One cable through the floor does, and it keeps working after the next firmware update.
