Should you repair, or replace the run entirely?

It's the most common question we get when a cable's failed. Here's the rule of thumb — no upsell, straight answer.

Repair makes sense when…

  • The damage is in an accessible spot (no wall opening required)
  • The cable is Cat6 or Cat6A and meets current standards
  • It's a single isolated fault (not "lots of issues across the building")
  • You're budget-conscious and the repair holds Fluke certification

Replace makes sense when…

  • The cable is Cat5e and you're noticing speed issues — Cat6/6A is now standard
  • The damage is behind a wall and inaccessible without opening up
  • You have multiple intermittent issues — likely a wider cable-fatigue problem
  • The original install pre-dates 2015 — likely time for a refresh anyway

The 3 data cable failures we fix every week

If you're reading this, you probably match one of these scenarios. Here's what causes each — and what the repair looks like.

Scenario 1 — The "one port stopped working"

You sit down, plug in your laptop, nothing. The other ports work fine. Most common cause: the RJ45 termination has worked loose at the wall plate, or a connector pin has corroded.

Fix: Re-terminate the wall plate, test to TIA-568, certify with Fluke. ~45 minutes on-site. From $280.

Scenario 2 — The "everything's slow"

Speeds that used to be gigabit are now crawling. Wireless still works but anything wired through that port is unusable. Usually a cable damaged behind a wall — pinched by a renovation, chewed by rodents, or stressed by being run tight around a corner.

Fix: Identify the break with a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer), then either splice with an inline coupler (cheaper, faster) or pull a fresh run. From $280 for splice, $480–$680 for full re-run.

Scenario 3 — The "after the electrician"

An electrician's done some work — added a power point, replaced a switchboard — and now data ports near the work area don't work. Almost always: the data cable was nicked or pinched during the electrical install.

Fix: Trace the damaged section, splice or re-run as required. Document the damage with photos for your insurer if the original installer needs to come back. From $280.

Auckland data & fibre cable repair — questions we hear every week

How quickly can you get to me?
Same-day if you call before 10am. Same-week guaranteed for anything else. After-hours (5pm–9am, weekends) available at $420 call-out.
Do you certify the repair?
Yes — every repaired port is tested with a calibrated Fluke DTX-1800 and certified to TIA-568. You get a printed test report + PDF for your compliance file.
What if the fault keeps coming back?
3-year workmanship warranty. If the repair fails within 3 years, we come back for free — no service call, no diagnostic charge, no "was it really us" argument.
Can you work after-hours so we don't have downtime?
Absolutely — after-hours callouts are $420 (business-hours $280). Weekend and evening work is common on our books, particularly for retail, hospitality, and medical sites.
Do you do cable repair for residential as well as commercial?
Yes — homeowners are welcome. Common jobs: post-renovation damage, fibre-connect installers who broke an existing Cat6 run, and rodent damage in older weatherboard homes.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our Auckland cabling services, pricing and process. Can't find what you're after? Call us on 0800 222 546.

How much does network cabling cost?

Pricing depends on the number of data points, cable type (Cat6 / Cat6a / fibre) and building complexity. We provide free site surveys and upfront fixed-price quotes — no hidden costs. Most extra Cat6 outlets start from $120 +GST. Call 0800 222 546 to book yours.

Do you charge for site surveys and quotes?

No — site surveys and quotes are free. Book online or call 0800 222 546 and one of our team will come to you, assess the job, and give you a clear fixed price before any work begins.

How long does a typical install take?

A standard residential or small-office install is usually completed in a single day — often same-day. Larger commercial or enterprise projects are planned with a clear timeline given before work begins, so you always know what to expect.

Are your technicians certified and licensed?

Yes. All installs are completed to TIA/EIA and AS/NZS 3080 standards, and any associated electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians. We are fully insured with $5M public liability cover.

What areas of Auckland do you service?

We service all of Auckland — Central, North Shore, West, East and South Auckland — plus the North including Orewa, Silverdale, Warkworth, Snells Beach and Mangawhai.

Do you provide a warranty on your work?

Yes. Every cabling install is tested, documented and backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty. If anything isn't right after your install, we'll come back and fix it.

Cat6 vs Cat6a — which cable should I choose?

For most homes and small offices, Cat6 is more than enough — it handles gigabit speeds easily and is more affordable. Cat6a suits businesses running heavy data, future-proofing for 10-gigabit networks, or longer cable runs. We'll recommend the right cable during your free site survey.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Auckland?

CCTV pricing depends on the number of cameras, indoor vs outdoor placement, recording method (NVR vs cloud) and cabling required. Most residential installs sit in the $1,500–$3,500 range, with commercial systems quoted on-site. Book a free survey on 0800 222 546.

Can you install fibre optic cabling for my business?

Yes — we install indoor and outdoor fibre including OS2 single-mode and OM3/OM4 multi-mode for backbone runs, server rooms and inter-building links across Auckland. All terminations are tested and certified to AS/NZS standards.

Do you provide after-hours or emergency callouts?

Yes. Real people answer Mon–Sun, and we offer emergency callouts for downed networks, broken cabling, camera failures and business-critical outages. Call 0800 222 546 anytime.

Can you add data points to an existing home or office?

Absolutely — adding data points to existing buildings is one of our most common jobs. We minimise wall damage, label every cable and tidy patch panels so future changes are easy. Most retrofits are completed in a single visit.
