What is low voltage cabling?

80% of a modern building's cables — one specialist trade

Low voltage cabling is any wiring carrying less than 50 V — data, voice, CCTV, access control, intercom, fire alarm, nurse call and audio-visual. It's a separate trade from mains electrical: most Auckland commercial buildings are now 80% low-voltage by cable count, outweighing the lighting and power cabling in any modern fitout.

Cabling For U is a specialist low-voltage contractor — we install the whole stack on one job, coordinate with the electrician and main contractor, and hand over one documented, certified system.

  • One accountable contractor — data, CCTV, access, AV and intercom on one quote.
  • 30–40% cheaper bundled — shared trays, one mobilisation, one comms cabinet.
  • Trade-coordinated — we attend site meetings and work in with electrical and fit-out.
  • Certified handover — Fluke reports, as-builts, cable schedules and warranty pack.

Who should install your low-voltage cabling?

Three ways Auckland fitouts get wired — and why a specialist low-voltage contractor is usually the cleanest and cheapest.

Four separate contractors

Data + CCTV + access + AV

A specialist per system. Four quotes, four mobilisations, four cable trays' worth of coordination — and on handover day, the data guy blames the AV guy.

Cost
$$$ — highest
Accountability
Split four ways
Handover
Four doc packs
Best for: very large builds where each system is a major contract in itself.
The clean way

One low-voltage contractor

CFU — the whole stack

Every sub-50V cable on one quote, one install programme, one comms cabinet and one accountable installer. Shared trays and a single mobilisation save 30–40%.

Cost
$$ — 30–40% less
Accountability
One contractor
Handover
One certified pack
Best for: most Auckland commercial fitouts, new builds and refreshes.

The electrician does it

Packaged with mains

Low voltage is a separate trade from mains electrical — a general electrician isn't a network cabler. Untested data, no Fluke reports, and no one owns the comms cabinet.

Cost
$$ — looks cheap
Accountability
Not their trade
Handover
Rarely certified
Best for: honestly — nothing beyond a couple of points. We coordinate with your electrician instead.

FAQs

Low voltage cabling questions, answered

Can't find what you're after? Call us on 0800 222 546 — real people, Mon–Sun.

What is low voltage cabling?
Any wiring carrying less than 50 V — data, voice, CCTV, access control, intercom, fire alarm, nurse call and audio-visual. It's a separate trade from mains electrical, and most Auckland commercial buildings are now 80% low-voltage by cable count.
How much does low voltage cabling cost in Auckland?
A small commercial install (data + CCTV + access combined) starts from $1,800 +GST. A mid-size office fitout with full low-voltage scope typically lands $6k–$24k; a large multi-floor build runs $40k–$180k. Always itemised per cable type and per outlet, with Fluke certification included.
Is low voltage cabling the same as data cabling?
Data cabling (Cat6/Cat6a/fibre) is one type of low voltage cabling, but not the only one. Low voltage also covers CCTV, access control, intercom, AV, nurse call and fire alarm cabling. We install the whole stack on one job.
Do I need an electrician for low voltage cabling?
No. Low voltage (under 50 V) is not regulated the same way mains is — it's a specialist trade, and a network cabler is the right person, not a general electrician. We coordinate with your electrical contractor for shared cable trays and ceiling work.
Can you coordinate with electricians and main contractors?
Yes. We attend trade coordination meetings — shared cable trays, shared ceiling penetrations, separation distances — and provide weekly install schedule updates and a snag list.
Do you install the network gear too, or just the cables?
Both. We can supply and install switches, firewalls, NVRs and access controllers — or terminate to your IT vendor's gear, whichever is cleaner for handover. Always priced upfront.
Do you install fire alarm cabling?
We install fire alarm cable routes — FP200 runs and fire panel data drops — to the fire engineer's spec, and coordinate with the engineer and certifier. We don't certify fire systems; we install the cable to the spec so certification is straightforward.
Are you Sitewise / SiteSafe certified for commercial sites?
Yes — current Sitewise and SiteSafe certifications, $5M public liability. Site inductions, hot-work permits and PPE compliance are standard practice on every commercial site.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our Auckland cabling services, pricing and process. Can't find what you're after? Call us on 0800 222 546.

How much does network cabling cost?

Pricing depends on the number of data points, cable type (Cat6 / Cat6a / fibre) and building complexity. We provide free site surveys and upfront fixed-price quotes — no hidden costs. Most extra Cat6 outlets start from $120 +GST. Call 0800 222 546 to book yours.

Do you charge for site surveys and quotes?

No — site surveys and quotes are free. Book online or call 0800 222 546 and one of our team will come to you, assess the job, and give you a clear fixed price before any work begins.

How long does a typical install take?

A standard residential or small-office install is usually completed in a single day — often same-day. Larger commercial or enterprise projects are planned with a clear timeline given before work begins, so you always know what to expect.

Are your technicians certified and licensed?

Yes. All installs are completed to TIA/EIA and AS/NZS 3080 standards, and any associated electrical work is carried out by licensed electricians. We are fully insured with $5M public liability cover.

What areas of Auckland do you service?

We service all of Auckland — Central, North Shore, West, East and South Auckland — plus the North including Orewa, Silverdale, Warkworth, Snells Beach and Mangawhai.

Do you provide a warranty on your work?

Yes. Every cabling install is tested, documented and backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty. If anything isn't right after your install, we'll come back and fix it.

Cat6 vs Cat6a — which cable should I choose?

For most homes and small offices, Cat6 is more than enough — it handles gigabit speeds easily and is more affordable. Cat6a suits businesses running heavy data, future-proofing for 10-gigabit networks, or longer cable runs. We'll recommend the right cable during your free site survey.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Auckland?

CCTV pricing depends on the number of cameras, indoor vs outdoor placement, recording method (NVR vs cloud) and cabling required. Most residential installs sit in the $1,500–$3,500 range, with commercial systems quoted on-site. Book a free survey on 0800 222 546.

Can you install fibre optic cabling for my business?

Yes — we install indoor and outdoor fibre including OS2 single-mode and OM3/OM4 multi-mode for backbone runs, server rooms and inter-building links across Auckland. All terminations are tested and certified to AS/NZS standards.

Do you provide after-hours or emergency callouts?

Yes. Real people answer Mon–Sun, and we offer emergency callouts for downed networks, broken cabling, camera failures and business-critical outages. Call 0800 222 546 anytime.

Can you add data points to an existing home or office?

Absolutely — adding data points to existing buildings is one of our most common jobs. We minimise wall damage, label every cable and tidy patch panels so future changes are easy. Most retrofits are completed in a single visit.
