But nobody who’s shopping for a smart home has ever heard of a wiring frame. It’s tradie-speak. Google doesn’t autocomplete for it. YouTube smart-home influencers rarely show one.
So here’s the plain-English version of what it is, why it matters, and what happens when you don’t have one.
What a smart wiring frame actually is
Physically: a metal or plastic enclosure — anywhere from 15cm x 15cm (small) up to a full 18U rack cabinet (large) — mounted on a wall in a cupboard, garage, or pantry corner. Patch panel on top, shelves for equipment, cable-management brackets.
Functionally: the central point every Cat6 cable in your house terminates at. Every ethernet run — lounge TV, hallway mesh AP, PoE camera by the front door, smart doorbell — all come back to this one box.
Your electrical switchboard is where every mains circuit terminates. Your smart wiring frame is where every data cable terminates. Same idea, different domain.
What actually goes inside the frame
For a standard 4-bedroom Auckland home with a full smart-home install:
- Patch panel (top): 12- or 24-port panel, every Cat6 cable terminates here, each port labelled (“LOUNGE-TV”, “MASTER-BED-DESK”, “HALL-AP-1”, “DRIVEWAY-CAM”)
- PoE switch (middle): typically 8- or 16-port with Power-over-Ethernet. Cameras, APs, VoIP phones, hubs get PoE. TVs, gaming rigs get data-only
- Router or ONT: Chorus fibre modem lives here if space permits. Router either lives here or gets replaced by Ubiquiti/pfSense gateway
- Smart-home hub: HomeKit hub, Google Nest Hub, Home Assistant server, Zigbee/Z-Wave hubs
- Optional extras: NVR for CCTV footage, UPS for whole rack, fibre patch, AV distribution amp

2. Difference between “sort of works” and “reliably works.” Wireless-backhaul mesh WiFi is the smart-home equivalent of “we’ll figure out drainage later.” The frame + wired backhaul is what makes WiFi work at 500+ Mbps everywhere instead of 40 Mbps in the master bedroom.

The 3 places a frame gets installed (in order of preference)

- Large frame (40+ drops): 24-48 port panel + 16-24 port PoE switch + full 9-18U rack cabinet. ~20-25% of total
Rule of thumb: budget for 30% more ports than you think you need. Every future addition is basically free if the ports are already there. Every future addition is a $200 headache if you have to expand the frame first.
What happens without a frame
Real Auckland examples of what we walked into:
- Mt Eden 4-bed: 8 cables running to the back of the router, held together with a rubber band. Cameras dropping randomly. One cable was crimped wrong 3 years ago and only intermittently connecting. Nothing labelled. Frame retrofit + re-termination fixed everything in a day.

How much does a frame add to install cost? Frame hardware + install labour typically 15-25% of total. Every future change is 3-5× cheaper — payback period is short.
Can I install a frame myself? Enclosure yes. Patch panel terminations — technically yes but fiddly and require a $2,000 Fluke certifier to test properly. Most DIY installs have 2-3 cables not working at spec.
Do you supply the frame or do I buy it? Both work. We usually supply because we know which enclosures + patch panels work well with which PoE switches.
Ventilation? Overheating? Modern PoE switches efficient. Standard cabinets have vents. Only issue if you cram everything into tiny sealed cupboard with beefy NVR — then add a small fan.
Dedicated power circuit? Not strictly. Just needs a power outlet nearby. For serious setups (UPS + NVR + multiple hubs), a dedicated circuit is worth having your electrician install.
