Any of these?
Any of these? You might have malware.
If your computer is doing at least one of these, book a free diagnostic. We'll tell you honestly whether it's malware, adware, or just something else that needs a tune-up.
Pop-ups + ads
Ads appearing on sites that never had them, or pop-ups when you open your browser.
Browser hijack
Your Chrome/Safari homepage changed without you doing it, or search redirects to a weird site.
New toolbars
A toolbar appeared in your browser that you didn't install. Often bundled with free downloads.
Suddenly slow
Your computer got slow overnight — not gradually. Something's running in the background.
Scam warning pop-ups
"YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED — CALL THIS NUMBER" — that's the scam itself.
Weird redirects
Click one link, land on a completely different site. Adware or DNS hijack.
Files locked or missing
Files renamed with .locked or .encrypted extension. This is ransomware — call us fast.
Programs at startup
Programs launching when Windows boots that you don't recognise.
The honest bit
But it's not always a virus.
Half the "virus" jobs we see aren't malware at all. That's why the diagnostic is free — we check first, then quote to fix.
Adware or bloatware
Bad free software (fake download buttons, "PDF converter" trojans, browser extensions) can cause every symptom of a virus without being one. Fix is different, usually cheaper.
Old software or Windows updates
Sometimes it's just years of Windows updates piling up, or an old browser eating memory. A clean-up + update usually fixes it. No malware involved.
Actual malware
Sometimes it IS malware — spyware, ransomware, browser hijackers, rootkits. That's when we do a full clean, install a proper security package, and show you how to keep it clean.
"We'd rather tell you it's a $99 tune-up than sell you a $249 malware clean you don't need."

Mum clicked a scam warning pop-up. Dad's Windows 7 laptop has three toolbars he didn't install. You live an hour away and can't be there.
Book on their behalf, put your card on it, tell us their address. We'll liaise directly with them, send you a photo when we arrive, and email you a summary when we leave. Your card, their peace of mind.
FAQ
Questions we get asked
How much does malware removal cost in Auckland?
Free on-site diagnostic. If we find malware and you want us to remove it, we'll quote a fixed price before starting — typically $149–249 for most home computers. Ransomware or reinstall jobs can be higher; we'll always tell you the number before we start.
How do I know if I've got a virus?
Common signs: pop-ups when browsing, new toolbars you didn't install, homepage changed, computer suddenly slow, programs launching on startup you don't recognise. But some of these can also be adware or bad free software — that's why the diagnostic is free.
Can I remove malware myself?
Sometimes, yes — Malwarebytes free tier can catch simple adware. But if you've got a browser hijacker, ransomware, or a rootkit, DIY tools miss them. And clicking "clean" on the wrong pop-up can install more malware. If you're not sure — call us before you click anything else.
Is it always a virus?
No. Often it's adware from a free download, old software eating memory, or Windows updates gone sideways. Our diagnostic checks all three before we quote for a malware clean.
Will I lose my photos or files?
No. Standard malware removal doesn't touch your files. If we recommend a full reinstall, we back up your photos/documents first (extra $99). Ransomware is different — talk to us fast if files are locked.
Do you set up antivirus software?
Yes. Once we're done, we install a proper security package (usually Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender, or Norton — your choice) and show you how to keep it updated.
Can you help remotely, or only on-site?
We prefer on-site for most malware jobs — it's faster and we can check the physical device. If it's minor (browser hijack, adware), remote via TeamViewer works and costs less. Book the diagnostic and we'll advise.
What if I'm scared to give you my computer?
We work on-site at your home or office — the computer never leaves the room. You watch us the whole time. If we ever need to take it away (rare), we sign a written commitment on what we're doing and when it'll be back.
