Quick answer: For most NZ homes, pick the ecosystem that matches the phones your household already uses. If everyone’s on iPhone → Apple HomeKit + Ubiquiti mesh. If everyone’s on Android → Google Home + Nest Hub + TP-Link mesh. If you love tinkering and want maximum flexibility → Home Assistant. If you want future-proof and don’t want to commit → wait for Matter to mature (getting there but not yet everywhere). The good news: all four ecosystems work over the same Cat6 wiring. Pick the ecosystem after the cabling’s in, not before.
The wrong question is “which is best” — the right question is “which fits my house”
Every “best smart home” article on the internet is written by someone with a $300 Amazon affiliate link at the bottom. So they’ll tell you Alexa is best because that’s what pays.
We install the Cat6 wiring underneath every ecosystem. We don’t sell any of them. So here’s the honest version.
All four major ecosystems work over the same wiring. Cat6 to your camera doesn’t care whether the camera reports to HomeKit, Google Home, or Home Assistant. That means the wiring decision — which is expensive and hard-to-change — is completely independent of the ecosystem decision (which is cheap and reversible).
Option 1 — Apple HomeKit
Best fit: everyone in your household is on iPhone. You already have an Apple TV or HomePod. You value polish over configurability.
Strengths: Polished experience. Excellent privacy (mostly local network, not cloud). HomeKit Secure Video is genuinely excellent (requires iCloud+). Reliable — “just works” for 95% of household members.
Weaknesses: Fewer devices supported than Google Home. HomeKit-certified devices typically 15-30% more expensive. Requires always-on Apple device (Apple TV or HomePod).
NZ hardware pairing: Apple TV 4K or HomePod Mini (hub) + Ubiquiti UniFi mesh + Logitech Circle View or Aqara G3 cameras + Aqara/Meross switches + Logitech Circle View doorbell. Budget: $2,500-4,500 for a standard 4-bed home.
Option 2 — Google Home + Nest
Best fit: everyone’s on Android. You already use Google Photos, Gmail, Maps. You want the cheapest ecosystem that “just works.”
Strengths: Cheapest hardware ecosystem. Google Assistant is the best voice assistant by a solid margin. Nest Hub screens are genuinely useful in kitchens. Widest device support.
Weaknesses: Privacy worse than HomeKit (Google Cloud processing). Nest Aware subscription creep ($10/mo for full cloud recording). Automation logic more limited than HomeKit or Home Assistant.
NZ hardware pairing: Google Nest Hub 2nd gen (kitchen) + Nest Mini (bedrooms) + TP-Link Deco X50 3-pack + Google Nest Cam or Wyze Cam v3 + TP-Link Kasa switches + Google Nest Doorbell. Budget: $1,500-2,500.
Option 3 — Home Assistant
Best fit: you love tinkering. Want maximum flexibility. Don’t want monthly subscriptions. OK spending a Saturday configuring things.
Strengths: Zero vendor lock-in. Genuinely powerful automations (“if motion + time + presence + weather = trigger cameras + notify” is trivial). Zero monthly subscriptions. Excellent dashboard customisation.
Weaknesses: Steep learning curve. Ongoing maintenance (updates every couple weeks, some break integrations). Family adoption can be tricky.
NZ hardware pairing: Home Assistant Yellow or Raspberry Pi 5 (hub) + Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB dongle + Ubiquiti or TP-Link Deco mesh + Aqara/Sonoff/Shelly switches + Reolink or Amcrest cameras. Budget: $1,200-2,500 + your time.
Option 4 — Matter (the future, not quite the present)
How it works: Matter is a cross-platform smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and most major brands. A Matter device works with HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, and Home Assistant simultaneously.
Strengths: Actually cross-platform. Mostly local control. Backed by everyone — not a walled garden.
Weaknesses (2026): Not enough devices yet. Coverage expanding fast but still spotty. Cameras and complex products still lag. Some features remain ecosystem-specific (HomeKit Secure Video, Google routines).
Recommendation: Buy Matter-compatible devices when you can. But don’t wait for Matter as your primary strategy — the ecosystem isn’t complete yet.
Common Auckland scenarios
- Family with kids, mixed devices, wants “it just works”: Google Home + Nest Hub. Cheap. Everyone can figure it out. Compromise privacy.
- Apple household, wants premium: HomeKit + Ubiquiti. Apple TV 4K hub. HomeKit Secure Video cameras. Family Sharing works beautifully.
- IT professional, wants to tinker, hates subscriptions: Home Assistant. Weekend setup. Zero recurring costs.

Can I switch ecosystems later? Yes — wiring stays the same, only hub and control software change. Migration usually takes a weekend.
Can I mix ecosystems? Yes. Common: HomeKit for daily family use + Home Assistant for advanced automations. Or Google Home for kitchen Nest Hub + Ubiquiti Protect for cameras.
What about Alexa? Works fine but less local device support in NZ. Amazon smart-home products (Ring, Blink) heavily US-focused. Steer toward Google Home over Alexa unless deep in Amazon ecosystem.
What about Samsung SmartThings? Works. Not popular in NZ. Viable if you have Samsung TV + phone + fridge, otherwise not our recommendation.
