Cabling resources: cost guides, buyer's guides and free tools for Auckland homes and businesses
Everything we've written down after 350+ Auckland jobs, sorted by the question you actually have. Read first, call when you're ready.
Start where your question is
What will it cost?
Real Auckland numbers for CCTV, data cabling, WiFi and smart wiring. No "call for a quote".
Which spec do I need?
Cat6 or Cat6A, mesh or hardwired, Hikvision or Dahua — the comparisons, decided.
Something's not working
1 Gbps fibre doing 50 Mbps, WiFi dropping in the meeting room, office network holding the team back.
Who do I trust with this?
How to vet an installer, what a quote should contain, and what to check before you sign.
What it costs in Auckland

Which one do you actually need?
Six comparisons we get asked about on nearly every job. Each one ends with a recommendation, not a "it depends".
Choosing a security camera

- 4MP, 6MP or 4K — How much resolution you need, and what it will not fix
- Hybrid light cameras — Infrared all night, white light only when something happens
- Active deterrence — Strobes, sirens and talking to someone on your driveway
- 180-degree panoramic — Covering a whole frontage without a blind spot
- 360-degree fisheye — When one camera on the ceiling beats four on the walls
- PTZ and TandemVu — When a camera that moves is worth it, and when it is a trap
- Number plate recognition — Why a normal camera will not read plates

- Coastal Auckland and salt air — Why weatherproof cameras still fail near the sea
- ColorVu full-colour night vision — When colour at night earns its keep, and when infrared does the job cheaper

Questions about these guides
Are the prices in these guides current?
Each cost guide carries a "last reviewed" date and is updated when our supplier pricing moves. If a guide is more than a year old, ring us before you budget from it.
Do you charge for the site survey?
No. We walk the site and speed-test it before quoting, across Auckland, at no charge. The quote you get afterwards is fixed.
Can I use these guides if I'm outside Auckland?
The specs and comparisons apply anywhere in NZ. The prices are Auckland labour rates; allow for travel outside the region.
Do you write these yourselves?
Yes. Every guide is written from our own jobs and reviewed by Namra Shah, CFU's director. We don't publish supplier press releases.
I've read the guide and I still have a question.
Call 0800 222 546 or book a free survey. If the question is a good one we'll usually turn it into a guide.
Comparing two or three quotes? Start with Cabled Right, our free guide to reading an Auckland cabling or security quote — eight questions to ask every vendor, the red flags, and a scorecard to compare three quotes side by side.
Read enough?
