Hikvision AcuSense vs basic motion detection: is it worth the extra?
Short answer: if you have a cat, a dog, a driveway that faces a road, or a fence with trees, AcuSense buys your evenings back. If your camera watches a fenced-in back yard with nothing moving in it after dark, basic motion is fine and you save about $80 per camera.
I’ve installed both sides of this on 50-plus jobs across Auckland over the last two years. This is what actually happens on real driveways in Mount Eden, real warehouses in East Tamaki, and my own house in the Shore where we have a cat named Miso who sets off every camera she walks past.
What basic motion detection actually does
Every entry-level Hikvision and HiLook camera has motion detection built in. It watches for pixel changes between frames. Anything that moves in the grid you’ve drawn, a person, a car, a possum, a moth, a swaying branch, a shadow from a passing cloud, triggers an alert.
On a quiet cul-de-sac at 3am, that’s fine. On a Great North Road frontage, it’s a nightmare. Here’s the pattern I see: client installs 6 cameras, gets 30 to 40 phone alerts per day for the first week, mutes the app, then the cameras stop being cameras. They’re just recording devices nobody looks at until something actually happens, and by then the footage is 14 days deep in a folder.
Basic motion has a second problem at night. Auckland’s mixed street lighting throws long moving shadows every time a car goes past. IR-mode cameras register the shift in illumination as motion. On our first house on the Shore I got 200 alerts in one night before I turned notifications off entirely.
What AcuSense actually does
AcuSense is Hikvision’s on-camera classification. The camera runs a lightweight neural network on its own chip that decides whether a moving shape is a person, a vehicle, or something it doesn’t care about. Cats, dogs, branches, shadows, headlights, moths on the lens, filtered out before an alert fires.
The Dahua equivalent is called WizSense. Same idea, similar accuracy, same price band. Both work well; brand loyalty here is usually about what your installer stocks and can support.
What matters is the two-stage detection: motion happens (cheap check), then the classifier runs (more expensive check) and drops non-human, non-vehicle events. The false alert rate falls from that 30 to 40 per day down to 2 to 5. Almost always the 2 to 5 are real, the courier, the neighbour walking their dog past the fence line, the ute pulling in.

The real Auckland data from 50+ installs
I keep rough numbers on this because clients ask. Averaged across the last 50 jobs (mix of residential and light commercial, all Hikvision or HiLook):
- Basic motion cameras, tuned: 25 to 40 alerts per day per house. Client mutes app within 2 weeks in about 8 out of 10 cases.
- AcuSense cameras, tuned: 2 to 5 alerts per day per house. Client keeps notifications on long-term in about 9 out of 10 cases.
- Retail perimeter with 8 to 12 cameras: basic motion generates hundreds of alerts per day. AcuSense drops it to under 20. This is the difference between a security guard checking the app and a security guard ignoring the app.
Tuning matters. Whatever camera you buy, if it isn’t set up with proper detection zones, sensitivity thresholds and schedule rules, it will annoy you. AcuSense doesn’t fix bad configuration. It reduces the ceiling of how bad the configuration can be.
What the price difference actually looks like
Prices below are Auckland trade-plus-install ballparks as of 2026. Real quotes vary with mount type, cable run and PoE switch requirements.
- Basic motion 4MP bullet (e.g. HiLook IPC-B140H): around $180 supplied and installed per camera
- AcuSense 4MP bullet (e.g. Hikvision DS-2CD2043G2-I): around $260 supplied and installed per camera
- Delta per camera: roughly $80
- 6-camera home: $480 extra for the AcuSense variant across the whole system
- 12-camera retail site: $960 extra
My honest read: on a 6-camera home, an extra $480 to stop your camera system from becoming useless within a fortnight is the easiest yes in the price sheet. On a warehouse with 20 cameras watching an empty yard where nothing moves after 6pm, the maths flips and basic motion is fine.
When to pay for AcuSense
Pay for it if:
- You have pets that go outside. A cat or dog inside the detection zone will make basic motion useless within a week.
- Your driveway faces a road with regular vehicle traffic. Every headlight sweep triggers a basic-motion camera at night.
- Your front camera has trees or foliage in the field of view. Wind and shadow will hammer you.
- You have a retail or commercial perimeter that you actually want monitored, not just recorded.
- Your household includes anyone who checks the app on their phone. AcuSense is the difference between a working system and an ignored one.
Basic motion is fine if:
- The camera watches a fenced back yard with no animals and no through-traffic.
- The camera is inside a locked garage or storeroom (motion is very rare and every event matters).
- The camera watches a warehouse aisle after hours with no HVAC-driven movement.
- Notifications are turned off entirely and the camera is purely for recorded playback.
What you cannot do with either camera
A few things get asked that neither AcuSense nor basic motion can actually deliver, so it’s worth being direct.
Neither camera does facial recognition well enough to identify a specific person. Hikvision’s DeepinView range does that with a real database and a real license fee, and it starts at a different price point entirely. Neither camera reads number plates reliably; that’s ANPR camera work, again a different product. Neither camera counts customers or tracks dwell time; that’s people-counting analytics on top.
What AcuSense does is one job: filter noise so real events cut through. That’s it. The rest is separate hardware and separate money.
The tuning that makes AcuSense worth the money
Two things every installer should do at commissioning, and most don’t:
1. Draw detection zones properly. Not a rectangle covering the whole frame. Draw around the walkway, the driveway, the door. Exclude the sky, the road beyond the fence, the neighbour’s yard. AcuSense with a bad detection zone still fires on every car that drives past your street.
2. Use scheduling. Different rules for daytime vs night. Higher sensitivity overnight because context matters more. Lower sensitivity during the day when the courier arrives every afternoon at the same time.
If your installer just plugs in the cameras and hands you an app login, they’ve done half the job. Ask them to walk you through detection zones and schedule tuning on handover. That conversation alone reveals whether they understand the product.
What we buy for our own installs
For residential jobs where the client has any of the pet, driveway or road-frontage triggers, we default to Hikvision AcuSense 4MP bullets (DS-2CD2043G2-I) or the ColorVu variant if the site has enough ambient light at night. For quiet back-of-house cameras on the same job, we drop back to HiLook basic motion to keep the budget sensible. Not every camera on a house needs to be premium.

The value of AcuSense is not better footage. It is that you keep the notifications turned on, because they stop being noise.

FAQ
Does AcuSense work in the dark?
Yes, but the classification accuracy drops as the image quality drops. A well-lit driveway with AcuSense classifies almost perfectly. A pitch-black yard with only IR will still classify humans and vehicles but you’ll see more misses on partial figures. Pair AcuSense with ColorVu if the location has any ambient light, that’s the combination we spec most often.
Can I upgrade a basic-motion camera to AcuSense later?
No. AcuSense is on-camera hardware, not a firmware feature. If you have HiLook basic-motion cameras and want AcuSense, the camera has to be swapped. Budget for the right camera at install time; retrofitting doubles the cost.
Does AcuSense need a special NVR?
No. Any Hikvision or HiLook NVR records AcuSense cameras normally. The AI classification happens on the camera itself. What the NVR gains is the ability to search recorded footage by event type, “show me all humans between 8pm and 6am” is a proper search on an AcuSense-plus-Hikvision-NVR combination.
Will AcuSense work with my existing DVR/NVR from another brand?
The camera will still push video via ONVIF or RTSP to most NVRs, and motion detection will still work. The AcuSense classification and event-type search only works with a Hikvision NVR. Mixed-brand setups lose the smart-search feature.
How much data does AcuSense save on storage?
Meaningfully, if you configure event-based recording. A camera that only records when a human or vehicle is detected uses maybe 15 to 25% of the storage of a camera recording continuously. On a 6-camera home that means 500GB does 30 days instead of a week. That said, most sites want continuous recording for playback in case something was missed; storage savings only apply if you accept the tradeoff.
Does AcuSense replace a monitored alarm?
No. AcuSense reduces false alerts so real events surface, but there’s still no human in the loop unless you pay for a monitoring service. A camera app pinging you at 3am is not the same as a monitoring centre dispatching a patrol. If you want response, you want a monitored alarm alongside the cameras, not just cameras.
What to do next
If you’re deciding on a new CCTV system: ask your installer whether AcuSense (or Dahua WizSense) is spec’d, and on which cameras. On any camera facing a road, driveway, garden with pets, or retail perimeter, insist on it. On quiet back-of-house cameras, save the money.
If you already have a basic-motion system that’s driving you mental with alerts: the fix is either detection-zone tuning (free, 45 minutes with a competent installer) or a swap-out to AcuSense cameras on the worst-offender positions. Often 2 or 3 targeted swaps beats muting the app entirely.

Is AcuSense worth the extra?
If you plan to leave notifications switched on, yes. Basic motion detection on a windy Auckland night will send you alerts for branches, rain and moths until you turn it off — and a camera you have muted is a camera you are not watching.
