4G cameras: security where there is no internet on site

Most CCTV assumes a broadband connection. Plenty of the places that most need watching do not have one — a bare section, a lifestyle block, a shed at the back of a paddock, a build that is six months from its fibre connection. A 4G camera has a SIM card in it and uses the mobile network instead.
Short answer: a 4G camera is the difference between coverage and none. It is not a cheaper alternative to a wired system, and it is not as good as one. Use it only where there is genuinely no connection available, and plan for a data plan and mains or solar power.
What a 4G camera actually needs
People assume “wireless” means “no infrastructure”. It does not. A 4G camera still needs two things:
- Power. This is the part that catches people out. The camera is not wireless for power — it needs mains, or a solar panel and battery sized for an Auckland winter rather than a January afternoon.
- Mobile coverage at the exact mounting point. Not at the gate, not where you are standing with your phone. At the camera, at the height it will be mounted, which can be meaningfully different.
We check signal at the actual position during the site visit, because discovering it afterwards means moving the camera or adding an external antenna.
Where 4G genuinely makes sense
- Construction sites. Plant and materials on site months before there is a connection. Cameras move with the build.
- Lifestyle blocks and rural sheds. Buildings a long way from the house, where trenching a cable is a bigger job than the camera.
- Bare sections. Watching an investment property or a build site with no power or connection yet.
- Temporary coverage. An event, a short-term yard, somewhere you need cameras for eight weeks.
- Remote gates and entrances. A long way from the main building, where the cable run is the expensive part.

Where it is the wrong answer
Anywhere a cable can reasonably reach. Wired is more reliable, has no running cost, carries power on the same cable and does not depend on a tower. If the run is possible, run the cable.
High camera counts. Each camera needs its own connection and its own data. Beyond two or three, a single wired system with one internet connection is both cheaper and more sensible.
Continuous remote monitoring. Live-streaming continuously over mobile data gets expensive quickly. 4G suits event-triggered clips, not watching all day.
Marginal coverage. If the signal is weak at the mount point, you will spend the life of the system troubleshooting rather than watching footage.
How the data actually works
This is the part worth understanding before you buy. The camera records locally to a memory card in the camera. It does not stream everything to the cloud — that would be unaffordable.
What crosses the mobile network is the small stuff: alerts, thumbnails, and the specific clips you ask for. When you open the app and request an event, that clip comes down over 4G, which is why review feels slower than a wired system on your home network.
Practical consequences: the memory card is your actual recording, so card size determines retention; if the camera is stolen the footage usually goes with it; and a plan with a few gigabytes a month is normally enough unless you are streaming live regularly.
Power is the real project
Where there is mains power nearby, this is straightforward. Where there is not, solar is the usual answer, and it is worth being realistic: an Auckland winter gives you short, often overcast days, and a panel and battery sized for summer will let you down in July. Size for the worst month, not the average.
The other option, where it exists, is running power out from an existing building and keeping only the data path on 4G. Often that is the cheaper and far more reliable combination.

Three questions worth asking your installer
- Have you tested signal at the mounting point, at height? Not at the gate, not on a phone at ground level.
- What is the ongoing data cost, and who holds the SIM? Know whether you are managing the plan or your installer is.
- What happens if the camera is stolen? If the only copy is on the card inside it, ask what else is possible.

Frequently asked
Do 4G cameras need power?
Yes. This is the most common misunderstanding. “Wireless” refers to the data connection only. The camera still needs mains power or a solar and battery setup sized properly for winter.
How much data does a 4G camera use?
Less than people expect, if it is set up correctly. Recording happens locally to a card; only alerts, thumbnails and the clips you request cross the network. A few gigabytes a month is typically enough. Watching live regularly changes that considerably.
Can I use my home broadband instead?
If it reaches, yes, and you should — wired is more reliable and has no running cost. 4G is for places broadband does not reach. Sometimes the answer is a wireless link from the house to the shed rather than either option.
What happens if the thief takes the camera?
If the footage is only on the card inside it, it goes too. That is a real limitation. Mounting out of reach helps, and some setups can push key clips off the camera as they happen — worth discussing if theft of the camera itself is a live concern.
Will it work anywhere in Auckland?
Almost, but not quite. Parts of the Waitakeres, some western and northern rural pockets and a few valleys have patchy coverage. We check at the mounting point rather than assuming, because moving a camera after the fact is the expensive way to find out.
Do 4G cameras need WiFi?
No. A 4G camera has its own SIM and uses the mobile network, which is the whole point — it works where there is no internet and no cable. It still needs power.
Is there a security camera that works without internet?
Two options. A 4G camera connects over the mobile network. Or any camera plus a local recorder will record perfectly well with no internet at all — you just cannot view it remotely until it is connected to something.
