Hikvision vs Dahua in NZ: the honest answer nobody in Auckland will give you.

Short answer: Hikvision and Dahua build comparable cameras, and picture quality is close enough that brand is not the deciding factor. What decides the job is the installer — camera positions, lens choice, cabling and commissioning. We fit Hikvision because we hold the accounts and know the firmware, not because Dahua is bad.

Every second homeowner who calls us has already been quoted both. One installer says Hikvision, one says Dahua, both say the other brand is rubbish. So which is it?

Here’s the short version: they’re both good. The reason installers push one over the other is usually which supplier gives them better margin, not which camera is better for your house. We install both. This is what we’ve learned across a few hundred jobs.

Short-answer box
For most Auckland homes (4-8 cameras, driveway + entries + backyard), Dahua is 15-25% cheaper for the same picture quality. For commercial jobs where AI accuracy matters (retail loss prevention, perimeter alerts on warehouses, ANPR on gates), Hikvision has the edge. HiLook (Hikvision’s residential arm) beats both on price for a straight 4-camera home starter. Anyone telling you one brand is objectively better across all jobs is selling, not advising.

The bit nobody mentions

Both brands are Chinese state-linked. Both have been on the US restricted list. Both have had firmware vulnerabilities patched. If that’s a hard no for you, we install Uniview (Chinese, not restricted), Reolink (consumer, DIY-friendly), and can quote Axis (Swedish, 3-4x the price). We won’t pretend Hikvision vs Dahua is a “which is more ethical” conversation. It isn’t.

What we will tell you is that both companies ship massive volumes into NZ through legitimate distribution (Ingram Micro, Atlas Gentech, LCP), both are covered by the standard 12-month manufacturer warranty on hardware, and we’ve got Dahua and Hikvision NVRs running on jobs from 2018 that are still going. Longevity is not the issue.

Picture quality. Genuinely a coin toss

We’ve done blind side-by-side tests on the same Auckland driveway. 4MP Dahua Starlight vs 4MP Hikvision ColorVu, same lens, same night. Someone who doesn’t stare at CCTV footage for a living cannot tell them apart.

The difference shows up at the extremes:

Full colour after dark. Hikvision’s ColorVu range and Dahua’s Full-Colour range both do this. Dahua tends to give a slightly warmer image (better for skin tones and vehicle colours), Hikvision a slightly punchier one. Preference thing.
Genuine low-light without artificial floodlight. Dahua Starlight has been in market longer and it shows in the tuning. Slight edge to Dahua here.
4K at 60fps for licence-plate capture on moving vehicles. Hikvision’s DarkFighter and Pro Series pull ahead here. Not by a mile, but noticeable if you’re trying to read plates on cars doing 40 down your driveway.

If your camera is stuck to the corner of your weatherboard looking at your front lawn, none of the above matters. Both brands will exceed what you need at the $180-$280 per-camera price point.

AI features. Where Hikvision genuinely leads

Both brands have “AI detection”. The marketing name for filtering motion alerts so your phone doesn’t buzz every time a moth flies past.

Hikvision calls theirs AcuSense. Dahua calls theirs WizSense. On paper they do the same job: only alert on humans and vehicles, ignore cats, wind, rain, headlights, shadows.

In practice, after tuning them on maybe 50+ jobs each, AcuSense is more accurate out of the box. We spend less time configuring exclusion zones on Hikvision jobs. Dahua works fine once tuned but needs more setup time. If you’re a DIY-installer buying off Trade Me, this matters. AcuSense will frustrate you less. If we’re doing the install, we tune either one and you’ll never see the difference.

The one case where AcuSense is clearly worth paying for: if you have cats or a dog in the yard. Every DIY CCTV owner we’ve retrofitted knows the pain of 400 alerts a day from your own pets. AcuSense’s animal filter is the best in market. Worth the Hikvision premium on that ground alone.

Real pricing. Same job, both brands

Same house, same 6-camera brief, calibrated against our current supplier costs and rate card. Both are fixed-price quotes we’d stand behind after a site walk.

Delta between full Hikvision and Dahua on this brief: $600. Which is roughly the margin a bad installer keeps for himself by pretending Hikvision is objectively superior. If you’re comparing quotes and one company is quoting $4,200 Hikvision without justifying the AI-accuracy reason, ask them what’s different. They probably can’t answer.

The NVR + phone app. This is where Hikvision actually wins

People don’t buy cameras. They buy the ability to check the property from their phone at 11pm from a hotel in Sydney. That’s an app conversation.

Hik-Connect (Hikvision’s app) is more mature, more stable, faster to load, and pushes notifications more reliably than Dahua’s DMSS. Not opinion. Measured on installs where we’ve had both apps on the same phone. Hik-Connect wins on the actual thing customers use every day.

DMSS crashes less than it used to. Dahua have shipped meaningful updates in the last 18 months. It’s caught up a lot. But if the remote-viewing experience is your #1 use case (holiday homes, rental portfolios, checking on elderly parents), Hik-Connect is still the smoother product.

Compatibility. The boring but important bit

Both brands are ONVIF-compliant, which means in theory you can mix cameras and NVRs across brands. In practice, don’t. You lose the AI features (AcuSense and WizSense only work brand-matched), you lose warranty support when something breaks, and firmware updates get messy. Pick one and stick.

What you can do: keep an old Dahua NVR and add Dahua cameras to it later. Or replace 2 failed Hikvision cameras with Hikvision replacements 3 years down the track and the NVR won’t care. Backward compatibility inside a brand is solid on both sides.

Warmer-tone image preference (Dahua’s default look)

Retail and commercial where false alerts costing labour time = pick AcuSense
Homes with pets that trigger DIY systems all day
Multi-site portfolios where HikCentral (their central management platform) is the differentiator
ANPR / number-plate work on driveways and gates. better recognition tuning
Clients who’ve already committed to Hik-Connect on a previous property and want one app for everything

When we tell you neither

Small apartments or 1-2 camera jobs. Reolink or Ring is fine, we won’t oversell you a 4-channel NVR you don’t need
Commercial jobs where the client’s IT/security policy excludes both brands. we quote Uniview or Axis instead
Jobs where the customer wants full local recording with zero cloud dependency. both are fine but we’ll spec differently

What actually matters more than the brand

Camera position beats camera spec, every time. A $180 camera pointing at the right doorway will do more for you than a $600 camera pointing at your lawn. We spend more time on the site walk than the install, because that’s where the value is.

Cable routing beats camera resolution. A Cat6 cable stapled to your weatherboard will fail in three years. Same cable properly routed through the ceiling void will last twenty. If the installer isn’t measuring cable runs and checking coastal exposure on the site visit, brand choice is the least of your worries.

NVR storage beats megapixels. A 4TB NVR gives you about 21 days at 4MP 24/7 across 6 cameras. Most people want 30. If your quote skimps on drive size to hit a price point, you’ll be paying to upgrade in year one. We spec storage based on your actual retention need, not what fits the budget.

Is Hikvision banned in New Zealand?

No. Hikvision is on the US restricted-entities list, which affects US federal purchasing. New Zealand has no equivalent ban for private residential or commercial use. Some NZ government departments have internal policies excluding Hikvision (and Dahua) for their own procurement. If you’re a private homeowner or business, both are legal to buy and install. If you’re a government contractor, check your agency’s policy before committing.

Which brand is cheaper. Hikvision or Dahua?

Dahua is typically 15-25% cheaper for equivalent hardware. HiLook (which is Hikvision’s residential range) is often cheaper than both. Where Hikvision commands a premium is on AI-heavy jobs (AcuSense, ANPR, DeepinView analytics) and on the Hik-Connect app experience.

Can I mix Hikvision cameras with a Dahua NVR?

Technically yes via ONVIF, practically no. You lose the AI features, warranty support gets messy, and firmware updates don’t play nicely. Pick one brand across cameras + recorder. If you already own a mix, replace the odd-one-out at the next opportunity rather than expanding both.

Which is better for Auckland’s weather?

Both brands’ outdoor cameras are IP66 or IP67 rated and handle Auckland rain fine. The bigger issue is coastal salt-air corrosion on the mounting brackets and cable glands, which is a specification-and-install issue not a brand issue. On coastal properties (Devonport, Milford, Long Bay, Mission Bay) we spec marine-grade housings regardless of camera brand.

Which one do you personally use at your own house?

Honest answer: Hikvision AcuSense, 6 cameras, because we have a cat. On a house without pets I’d have gone Dahua and pocketed the $600.

Do you install both brands?

Yes. We’re accredited for both through our supplier network and hold current warranty-registered installer status for both product lines. We’ll quote both, explain the delta, and install whichever you pick.

Is Hikvision or Dahua better?

Neither, consistently. They build comparable cameras at comparable prices and each leads on different features in different years. What decides your footage is camera position, lens choice, cabling and commissioning — all installer decisions, not brand ones.

Which brand do you install and why?

Hikvision. We hold the accounts, we know the firmware and the recorder behaviour, and we can get parts quickly. Familiarity with one range produces better results than switching brands per job.
